I agree, when you are learning beginner or intermediate level skills an intensive program is great. Once you get to an advanced level, real experience in a country where the language is spoken is key. It just depends on what skills you are looking for. If you want to be able to read newspapers and literature in Arabic really well, studying MSA at Middlebury is great. If you want to learn a dialect, of course, America can't offer you much. |

There are some good programs in the middle east that teach msa a few hours a day, and also the local dialect. perfect combination. as long as you have a good teacher, you can learn msa anywhere, but dialect is so much more fun and less complicated. you hardly ever see the fruit of your labor when it comes to msa, but the second you walk into the street, you are using dialect, so the motivation to learn it is so much greater.
