In Reply To: I've seen various comments about the Poly on this board, e.g. that at least for the DO it is pretty horrible, several hours long, up to three times required, etc., and that there are different segments like 'lifestyle', and background, etc. These posts seem to be mostly from DO folks. Can anyone explain if the DO & DI Polygraph tests are different, or does the DI ask different questions? What's the DI Poly like?
Message: The type of polygraph administered by CIA is called a "full scope" polygraph. It contains a "lifestyle" portion, but since the other major polygraph used in the Intelligence Community (the counterintelligence poly) does not ask lifestyle questions, the terms "full scope polygraph" and "lifestyle polygraph" are generally interchangeable. Other agencies also give full scope polys, including FBI, NSA, some parts of DOD, White House, etc. In my experience, there is only one "full scope" polygraph standard within the Intelligence Community, as evidenced by the fact that those agencies that use the full scope all accept each other's test results. Consequently, I doubt there is a FORMAL difference between the DI and DO full scope poly, although I wouldn't be surprised if the individual polygrapher might focus more on different issues for each type of candidate (i.e. overseas contacts for DO personnel).
