I'm pretty sure I've seen a chart that ranks both at the highest level of difficulty (for native English speakers to learn).
At any rate--logically, if Korean is ranked as the highest, the Japanese must be as well. As sleepyjean said, the grammar is very similar, and Japanese has the added diffulty of Sino-Japanese characters. |

On a lighter note, Welsh is extremely difficult to learn but somehow I don't belive our friends from Wales are going to rise up anytime soon.
The high target languages they announce are all high threat areas so that's why Korean is mentioned along with Chinese, Farsi, Arabic, etc. Japanese (as you say) is equally difficult to learn for a native English speaker and hope it's on the highest list but don't have confirmation on that. Thanks for your info. Yes, JP & Korean grammar sytex is almost identicle.
