I have a business background with several years of experience, very strong college education and standardized test results, and speak a lesser-known European language. All of these things, however, were evident in the preliminary process. My progress was encouraging.
The "suitability" problem, so said the letter, was something that came up in my med/poly and psych processing, and the only thing I can think that did it was that I saw a therapist for a period of four months once after a rough break-up. Otherwise, I have zero problems in my past.
Who knows.. I would just like to know if whatever the mystery "suitability" problem will prevent me from getting other government jobs.

Honestly, from all that I've read on the DO, they are not looking for people with exactly your type of background. I don't think they're looking for clean cut, fully honest people. They are looking for people on the fringe. People who are able to hold two opposing dichotomies in their heads. I think a decent amount of DO folk cheated in high school or college. For example, Gary Schroen, the undercover officer in this article cheated his way through school:

How are you supposed to perform morally corrupt operations on behest of the U.S. government if you cannot mentally handle torturing people, stealing, manipulating good people or killing people in cold blood?
They are looking for good people who engage in mostly innocent "bad behavior". Things like pranks in school, cheating, evidence of strong manipulation skills, etc.
As far as you business goes, I know that the CIA in the last few years has been sending "undercover business men" to Europe to set up front companies in the consulting arena. They were especially interested in setting up highly technical oriented companies in engineering, science and computer science disiplines.
Also, I think that at some point in the recruitment process, you are evaluated for your aptitute for the different DO divisions. The most prominent division currently is the Coutner Terrorism Division. They way to get in there is by being a second generation american who speaks a foriegn language at near native fluency and an intimate understanding of a foreign culture, especially middle eastern.
