I do not have any business/financial background. I am in the high tech industry right now. If I want to go into Corporate Finance, would the CFA be sufficient ? (I already have a Masters in Electrical Engineering). Would a Masters in Financial Management be useful in this case ?
Any opinion is welcomed ! |

All depends in what you really want. you are in high tech and want to change your career to Corporate? strange change! First, what you mean by Corporate Finance? from IB or Finance division from a company? Both required very different background, skills and preparation. Lets start with Corporate Finance(Investment Banking)start with an MBA from a top school and thats it...... your background dont help in this area, but is very valuable in other areas of IB!! without MBA or CFA you are valuable in Financial Engineering(Securitization,Derivatives,MBS,ABS and Arbitrage) as Equity Analyst high Tech from sell side and maybe as Bond Trader, because of your quant skills.
Finance Div. from a company forget the CFA aint shit in this area. Go for the Master you just said and maybe a CFM designation. http://www.imanet.org
Venture Capital is another area that you have an asset from your bakground, but you still need an MBA and is very difficult to break in this field.
The CFA is for people who work or wants to work in buyside(Investment Management)
Managing Mutual Funds or in the Investment Div from a Bank or Trust or Managing the money of High Networth Individuals. With your quant background and the CFA you could do fine! specially in Fixed Income. You also can work in Risk Management from your background is very usesful

So I hope I help you with this data.
