In Reply To: I'm hoping someone can provide some insight. I'm currently in an unbarable job and would desparately like a new job. I've been looking for quite some time but without any luck. I have not tried head hunters or recruiters yet, my experience has been that they have little to offer. What does anyone have to say about quitting the current job and concentrating all my efforts and a new one? Does anyone have any stories or advice? I must stress my current situation is not good.
Message: This message is coming from someone who did actually quit! I was in a work situtiaon where a new boss wanted to eliminate all the people hired by the previous accounting head. Basically the company copped out of doing layoffs so made the employees one by one (small department) so miserable they found new jobs and/or up and quit! They didn't anticipate that that some who left had skill they would need later. When I quit, I cleaned out my desk and informed the HR person that it would be my last day... I was never asked why I was leaving or to stay and give two weeks notice. I was lucky to have a family friend, for whom I could work for while searching for a new job. I used my contacts from my prior employer and got a new job in 3 weeks time. With a large increase in salary and better working environment. You will have to consider all the negative ramifications of quitting - how long were you employed in this bad situation, do you have references lined up, etc. How will you explain it in an interview situation. Speaking negatively of a prior employer is a "No No"... I think the job market is tough now, and you will find positions harder to find. Try the agencies for sure - but don't go with too many - perspective employers will often pass over people whose resumes show up on their desks from more than one agency. The employer is in a tough spot as to who to pay a fee to regardless of whether or not they like you for their opening. Networking is supposed to hold the best results!! Good luck - been there done that!
