I work in foreign affairs in Washington and have for about 10 yrs. I speak several languages and have a fair amount of substantive knowledge but it doesn't include finance or accounting (though I did minor in Econ quite a while ago).
My question is: is there any realistic expectation that I could make a switch from govt to either IB or Private Equity or something similar without going back for an MBA? I'd like to get into advising on foreign market entry, etc. (and make more money than my current $70+K govt salary).
I have an "in" to a major PE firm in this area but don't want to embarrass myself by claiming I can do a job that I'm utterly unqualified for.
I would appreciate any guidance you can provide.

Dear mc,
Why are you assuming that you may be "utterly unqualified"? Since you have an "in" why not ask for an informational interview asking what might be available for you in the industry, does that person think you'd need an MBA, etc. & who else you should talk with about this (to get more opinions)?
Also, do you have to limit yourself to being hired as an employee? What co's, groups, other kinds of firms need your expertise? Could you consult?
Post your questions on the IB msg board >browse all boards > by industry, too.
Best of luck to you,
Jane Allen
