I think you're right about keeping current job. The job market is really down...:(
But I also think it's the time when you can heavily study/go to school and earn a degree/advanced degree.
And then when the economy will be back to normal you can get all the "cream" out of your degrees/licenses.

While I'm not burned out with my profession--programmer/analyst, I have had the "worst" working environment experience, too.
My thanks for enduring the pain? Layoff.
I'd say "bounce" now--find a job in your current profession that has a better environment AND pursue your long-term goals of higher education.
A more positive environment will encourage your efforts at bootstrapping to the next level not distract you or pull you down emotionally and physcially.
