In Reply To: I recently took a new job and soon realized I was hoodwinked in the bonus and benefits dept. By then I had already quit the last job. My question is, what is the best way to handle this on a resume? I am afraid if I list the current job I will look like a nut after such a short time. However, the title and duties are a step up from the last job and can really beef up my resume. Should I only address this in the cover letter and use old resume? Help.
Message: Dear imc: First, you might want to get some advice from the vault compensation/benefits expert. Post a msg on his board. Second, a cover letter should cover why you think you're a great fit for the job. You don't have to explain why you are looking for a job. Third, you've got 2 choices: leave the job off the resume or leave it on. If you leave it on, you will be asked why you're leaving so soon. Have your explanation ready. DO NOT bring up the hoodwinking! You cannot say anything negative about a previous employer except something bland like, "It just isn't what I expected" or "Just not the right fit for me." Leave the details for friends and family. They don't belong in an interview. If you decide to leave it off, then you've got a blank space there & you'll need a reason for that because you'll get a question like, "what have you been doing since...?" Is the old job still available? Hope you didn't burn your bridges there. Good luck, Jane
