In Reply To: What is the best way to break the news to your boss when you are leaving a position for a different job, and you know the news will be a big surprise. My specific situation os that I work at a pretty good job with great people, but I know that ultimately I can never excel at the company because I'm not genuinely interested in their line of business. Not trying to to burn any bridges - just taking a slightly higher paying position at a company I know I can get excited about. What's the best procedure - anyone with a similar experience to share? Thanks in advance!
Message: I agree with others. Make it about you and your career goals. Be certain that the employer you are leaving as well as the staff knows how much you appreciate the time you have spent there. I just left a similar situation and I am still in contact with my former boss. I left a detailed memo about the projects I had not completed and the option for the new director to call if there were any questions I might be able to assist with. I was able to assist a few times. In my opinion the letter of resignation is important. Be kind, but be true to the relationship with your boss. I actually told my boss in the letter that I was going off to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a pirate. (I told her the real reason I was leaving in person.) It was a perfect bit of humor that made the process a bit easier for both of us. Good luck in your new job.
