What is the best way to break the news to your boss when you are leaving a position for a different job, and you know the news will be a big surprise. My specific situation os that I work at a pretty good job with great people, but I know that ultimately I can never excel at the company because I'm not genuinely interested in their line of business. Not trying to to burn any bridges - just taking a slightly higher paying position at a company I know I can get excited about. What's the best procedure - anyone with a similar experience to share? Thanks in advance! |

I was recently in the same situation. I had a good job working with great people and received an offer to good to pass up.
After giving my two weeks notice, I broke the news to my staff and started the process of handing over all major projects and documenting all open items. I left a very detailed memo describing all open items and projects and left my personal email if there were any questions. I also sent email notes letting the staff and management team that I enjoyed working with them and was available for any questions or just to stay in touch. So far, so good.
