In Reply To: Firms like Bernard Haldane have often run into problems with the States Attorney Generals over the years because they use pressure tactics to have clients sign significant contracts and then don't deliver what they promise. Check out any firm carefully with references of former clients and Better Business Bureau records, etc. Generally, you are better off with professional career counselors and coaches not affiliated with these kinds of organizations.
Message: After a lay off in July, my company paid for outplacement services with one of these firms. They refer to themselves as "career marketing" firms. They took all the money up front, then I went through a series of self assessments, seminars and networking events. All in all, it is definately not worth the money ($4K+). While there are some areas that are usefull in a job search, you can get most of the info yourself through research and career assessment books. There were a number of attornies, gov't employees, telecom people, etc. that were going through the process at the same time as me. In most of the networking events that this company sponsors, people talk about how they felt ripped off, but wanted to somehow get something out of it. These companies (Haldane, Execitive Transitions International in DC, etc) are all about making $$$ for themselves. The other advice posted here in terms of finding a monthly fee career coach, etc will be more productive. Also, your college's career center can provide the same services as these firm for nothing. And the hidden job market? Well, the reason the jobs are hidden is because THEY'RE NOT THERE!!! Networking ultimately is the key to your success.
