My advice |

I have almost 10 years of accounting experience. I have a BA in Accounting and I am a CPA.
In those 10 years I implemented JDE World GL and AP and worked on an implementation of Peoplesoft. I have always been the technical guru in the accounting groups I have worked.
I would like to try my hand at being an Oracle DBA. How should I go about making this career change? Should I get certified first?
Any information and advice you can give is greatly appreciated.
Thanks. |

Stay in the financial industry. It's becoming more & more important that IT folks have functional knowledge of an industry in addition to technical skills. As for switching to DBA, this is what I would recommend. First, get certified. Buy some books, get a trial copy of Oracle to practice on, and get busy. Once you are certified, a resume highlighting your past experience and your current certification should get you in the door as a junior DBA. Learn all you can and work your way up. My guess is that there are a lot of organizations out there that would love to have a technical person that knew the industry inside & out.
