In Reply To: I am 31 y.o., and an software engineer. I didn't find it that hard to reach six-figure landmark... had to getaway that darn title of "programmer" first, of course. Well, I got a different perspective. I think "prestige" that you refer to as job titles is actually earned when a person does what he/she does the best in his/her most professional manner. Titles don't give "prestige", but professionalism does.
Message: How did you manage to get to the 6 figure mark? Right now I'm somewhere in the top 10% for my geographical area (according to all of the salary surveys I've seen), and I have a little over 4 years experience. I just don't see the industry paying me any more in the future. Jobs for my specialty (C++ systems software) are being advertised for ridiculous rates right now. Are you talking C2C or FTE? As far as what constitutes prestige, we are all entitled to our own opinions. You're not going to convince me that being a programmer is as prestigious as being a professor of computer science or a lawyer. You may feel that it is, and I respect that. It just ain't me though.
