After earning an International MBA I went into management consulting. Most of my time was spent in a technical role, but I did pick up systems analysis, team lead, and CRM experience. I am interested in taking these skills into the corporate world, but don't feel the IT/CIO track is for me. I am considering the MSF to give me a strong understanding in financial modeling for M&A and stragegic investments. My belief is that the systems/IT understanding combined w/ the MSF will make me valuable when looking for positions either in corporate finance, strategy consulting or M&A from an IT perspective.
Does this sound like a winning combination or is my logic off? What are other options w/ this skill set combination I may not have considered? |

First of all, from someone with an MBA in MIS (and ERP consulting experience) who has coincidentally worked for an M&A firm (writing technology industry research and modeling comps during the Gold Rush), your logic is off. If you think you have a competitive advantage because of your tech experience, that is not the case now because no one is doing tech M&A. (Note: I'd still have my job if the tech economy didn't bust.)
Mostly, they are looking for young guys with finance skills and experience, preferably from a top school.
I've also thought about improving my finance skills/education and combining the IT experience. However, I believe this background is better suited for the corporate world and not investment banking. Unless, of course, technology booms, again, which probably won't happen for a long time.
Sorry if I appear negative, but it's a tough environment right now.
