Too Early? |

I was hired in the begining of the year at one of the big 5 (4) firms and unfortunately I got put in to a dept that is very specialized and I'm not getting the tax experience that I'm looking for. Is it too soon for me to start looking for another job or should I tough it out and wait until next year so that I have this firm on my resume for a year?
Any thoughts, suggestions? I have already thought about rotations and/or transfers and it's not feasable at the moment. |

Dear Jane,
I'm always curious about what happened when I hear this kind of message. Did they promise you something, but didn't deliver? Was the offer/promise too vague? Were you not definite enough about what you wanted? Did what you want change? You need to consider what happened in order to avoid a 2nd mistake.
Having said that, it's not too early to start looking! If you're not getting what you want, you're not happy & don't see a chance for real change, then look around for something better. There may be nothing better right now, but at least you've looked.
The positive view: When you find the perfect new spot (and before you make the leap), you need to consider carefully - how to make sure you'll get what you want this time; is the firm healthy & a good long-term bet for you, etc.
Best wishes,
Jane
