Bored with Acctg |

I have a bachelor's in accounting. I am currently a payroll accountant for a school district. I've worked 1 year here and prior to that 4 years as a cost accountant/ estimator for a private mfg company. I am very bored. The work is very boring and meaningless to me. I don't know if public acounting is much different. I've considered taking the CPA exam and applying for a job at a CPA firm, but I don't know if this will solve my problem. I'd like to hear from other accountants, public & private, and from others who are or have been in my position. I'd greatly appreciate some advice. Also, I'm open to listening to new career options outside of the business world. I've considered pharmacist and teacher. Thank you. |

Dear Larl:
Be sure to post your message on the Vault acctg msg board, too (>browse all boards > by industry). I don't know if public acctg would be much different for you, either. Depends on: what's the boring part? What about pharmacy or teaching interests you? What interests, talents, skills are you not using now? What might you combine with your acctg exp to make it interesting?
You could talk to some CPA's & find out how much boring part there is (do some informational interviews). You could get the Richard Bolles book "What Color is Your Parachute?" or some of the other books that help you to figure out what you want. Or you could try talking with a career coach, as prev. post suggested.
I offer a free 30-min coaching session to anyone. Send me an email if you're interested.
Best wishes,
Jane
