PhD or IB? |

Hi - I'm currently an Analyst primarily in software & IT and I do whole bunch of different commercial work. I have an Electronic Engineering Degree and have been working for a large Aerospace company for the last 3 years. I am currently doing a Master of Finance. I'm about half done and in the top few in the cohort. The other day the Dean of Finance asked me join them and another Academic based in NYC in a Research project. They offered me full scholarship and a PhD. The research seems very industry relevant and brings together my programming and engineering skills with the finance. I wanted to move to Investment Banking at the end of my Masters, but all the talk I hear about the industry being down I am now thinking the PhD would be a good thing to do until things pick up. However my concern is the complete lack of industry experience I would have at the end of PhD. I think it would be better to work in an IB for now. |

Dear jase,
BUT could you get an IB job in the near future? Things don't look very good out there.... Aside from that, though, I'm a firm believer in grabbing opportunities that are dropped in our laps. They often lead to more unexpected good stuff. This sounds like a prestigious offer. AND a full scholarship! Sounds like it might be just the spot to ride out economic woes. Who knows where the IB biz will be in a year or 2?
Wondering what about IB is so attractive that you might pass this up for that?
Give this some careful thought if you're leaning toward turning it down. In fact, if you want to email me, we can set up a free 30-min coaching session to help you sort some of this out.
