Hi - I'm currently an Analyst primarily in software & IT and I do whole bunch of different commercial work. I have an Electronic Engineering Degree and have been working for a large Aerospace company for the last 3 years. I am currently doing a Master of Finance. I'm about half done and in the top few in the cohort. The other day the Dean of Finance asked me join them and another Academic based in NYC in a Research project. They offered me full scholarship and a PhD. The research seems very industry relevant and brings together my programming and engineering skills with the finance. I wanted to move to Investment Banking at the end of my Masters, but all the talk I hear about the industry being down I am now thinking the PhD would be a good thing to do until things pick up. However my concern is the complete lack of industry experience I would have at the end of PhD. I think it would be better to work in an IB for now.
