In Reply To: Hi. I hope someone here can help me out. A couple people at my old job had something called MOUS certification (Microsoft Office User Specialist), and seemed to be very well-qualified for desktop admin and support positions. I am wondering how well this kind of certification would serve me in securing a full-time position in a similar role (hopefully at a stable company). I have been having a very hard time finding work and most of my skills come from the same dotcom job that I had for 2.5 years before we went under. Any info or advice about this appreciated. Also, what about the cost, time for training, etc? Anything else someone with a short resume could consider to be more marketable in the workplace right now? Thank you, Korbin
Message: It seems like the larger corporations value Microsoft certification much more than smaller companies which are more flexible about on the job training. I've seen MOUS as a requirement or suggested certification in many job postings, but they seem to be with larger companies. Of course, that's based on my limited observations. If you are looking into moving to a corporate environment, I think it will do you a lot of good. In any case, it couldn't hurt, and anything that gives you an edge is useful. For someone who doesn't have a ton of job experience, MOUS can be a good yardstick for employers to know some of your skillset compared to other applicants. Especially now that Office versions are getting more complex, I think it's a good idea. If you have the time, which you do. I would suggest searching out MOUS on the MS website, and also looking at what kinds of books are available through Amazon or any other bookstore. There are independent sites for MOUS which I have seen others post from time to time. I'm sure someone here can contribute links, or you can google them.
