End to Strategy Consltg? |

Hi Jane,
I am qualified chartered accountant and cost accountant from India. Post qualification I worked for a German Investment Bank (in India) as an equity research analyst for 3 years and then moved on as a SAP (functional) implementation consultant and have been in this role for more than 4 years. I now believe SAP skills are more closer to ??commodity?? and also being a non-techie there is very little scope to move forward on a high growth on this course. Hence, I am now keen to move on to strategy consulting to capitalise on my varied work experience.
Currently I am in one of the Big five in London and will soon start my Executive MBA in a top 10 business school. I have already approached some agencies and some contacts and they feel that I have too much of SAP experience and would find the move difficult. Hence, I feel all the more necessity to move away from SAP as soon as possible and also complement my EMBA.
Further, some of messages relating to strategy consulting on this board are discouraging ?? they seem to suggest that skills in this area are very intangible and some of them suggest an END to strategy consulting !
I am currently 30 and could you help me on :
1. What they feel about my proposed career change? Any better alternatives?
2. More insight into strategic consulting and my fit into it?
3. My chances of getting into McKinsey, BCG, Bain??..?
Thanks
P.S. I have also posted the above message to the industry board and awaiting views/suggestions from all. |

Dear tibs:
Don't know that I would agree that strat. consltg is dead... You say you are keen on that field, so go for it. Your credentials sound excellent. Focus on getting what you need to make this transition. Find out what exp., classes, skills, contacts, etc. you require & make a plan for acquiring them.
Best of luck to you
Jane
