VC or Hi-Tech? |

Hi!
I am recently offered a summer internship at a small, fairly new private equity investment firm. If I take the offer, it will mean a career change for me as my prior experiences are all in the marketing area. I wonder if I should give this a shot, considering that I also have another marketing internship offer from a more established high-tech company. What qualities are needed to succeed in the VC industry? What's the outlook for the industry? And what other factors should I consider?
THanks!

Ouch! A year ago I would have said, "VC is hot! Why not go for it?" But that boom is gone. Who knows when it will return. You say they are a fairly new small firm. In this market, that troubles me. On the other hand, this is not a permanent job. An internship is the best way to find out exactly what the biz (and this particular co.) is all about. Do you like number crunching & analyzing businesses? I suspect there will be a lot of that for an intern. ButMktg calls up an image of more of a meeting & greeting type of personality. Think about which offer fits your personality & interests best. Consider, too, whether you are looking for a summer spot that you hope will turn into a permanent offer when you're done with school. Or are you still exploring various fields and wanting to try something different?
Congrats on having two offers!
