Hello, fellow Vault Member, you are in luck! I am a 26 year-old native of Detroit, MI. Although I reside in the metro DC area, I have no bad feelings about Motown. In fact, I recently visited my friends and family there over Easter vacation.
To answer your question about great metro Detroit cities, let me give you a few ideas:
1) Royal Oak- good restaurants, entertainment, living, etc.
2) Dearborn- not bad, a bit closer to Detroit area.
3) Ann Arbor- further from Detroit, college town (U of M).
4) Southfield- pretty cool, a bit family-oriented.
Although this is a short list, I hope it helps.

I too grew up in Detroit... I'm now in Chicago. I second the Royal Oak suggestion. Also check out Birmingham... and Ann Arbor. I haven't lived in Detroit for 10 years the Dearborn suggestion sounds a little sketchy but times may have changed. Good Luck
