i have over 5 years of consulting experience, but am looking for a break into inv banking.
i saw an ad in the paper today that i'd like to apply for, but wonder if the captioned position (research assistant) is too junior?
the ad promises "..a potential for a full analyst position in a year" - is it worth it? i'd really appreciate any suggestions.

I left the IT field for a research associate position writing sell-side technology research. Now that the market has turned in the tech sector, I can expect to be laid off (mainly because I'm too geeky and don't match the investment banking profile.)
I would be very careful, because very few people succeed long-term in the investment banking business. The investment banks hire a new crop of junior people every year and then work them to death. Most analysts decide to leave after two years of 80 to 100 hour work weeks.
You should decide if it's something you really want to do. Do some research. People usually love it or hate it, so be prepared.
