I graduated college in May 2000 and have been working at a dumb IT job since November. I HATE it, more than anything imaginable, and I want desparately to make the switch over to the financial side of things. I was an econ major and past internships of mine look great and are very financially oriented. But the pay here is excellent and the market sucks.
So should I quit before looking for something else? This job is driving me insane, but I'm afraid someone like me would be much worse off trying to get hired while unemployed, and things are difficult enough as it is anyway. Any thoughts?
Also, I dont mind a decrease in salary. I just want to get my career on the right track instead of this retarded tech garbage. |

you sound like you are in the exact situation my boyfriend was 2 months ago. he hated his job at a web consulting company and wanted to get into finance. he talked about looking for a new job, but it was hard, having a good paying job to get really seriously motivated (regardless of how much you hate it). then, fortunately (or unfortunately), he was laid off along with much of the office from the web company. immediately, he was much happier, even without a job. but because he didnt have a job, he had significantly more motivation to look for a new job.
he got a few offers within a month or so. i agree the market sucks, but i think there is still plenty of jobs for talented people.
about switching to finance, you might leverage off your it knowledge to get your foot in financial institutions, where it will be easier to switch later on. i know this might be a roundabout way, but might be worth considering, especially given the current economic climate (and its effect on the financial industry).
