In Reply To: Since leaving the Military in 1986 I have found that having my experience on my resume has been a huge asset. Of course it all comes down to how you sell yourself. I previously worked in Heavy Equipment Sales and am currently a Director at an Advertising Agency. The part that I have found that all employers can understand (and are motivated by) is that my military experience has given me the ability to: be Self-directed, goal-oriented, set in motion detailed plans with checks and balances timetables etc., and to never give up. Your military training makes you an incredibly flexible person. Think about it. You had to work with an incredibly diverse group of people. You couldn't let personal problems get in the way so you learned to look past them. You didn't have the option of not getting the job done. And you were accountable for everything you did. Sounds like the perfect employee to me. Now advertising may be a far cry from the military but it is the military skills that have made me sucessful in this position. You can learn the specifics for any job. But the base from which you are building is much stronger than that of most civillians. So figure out which industry or service looks like the most fun to you and then go out and sell yourself.
Message: It's nice to hear a good story about leaving the military. It seems most of the people above me stress staying and all the benefits the Air Force has to offer, I couldn't agree more and I have taken advantage of most of them especially the education aspect. The only thing is I will have been in 8 years and by next September I will have my Bachelors. I guess I'm kind of bored with my job. I'm a Data Systems Analyst and that part I love but we do statistics on the same aircraft every month. I guess I just want to see what else is out there. Thank you for the advice and letting me see there are other things out there.
