Is it preferable to quit? |

Hello Jane,
Am in need of some advice:
I have just started my first job as of 2-3 months ago. I hate what I am doing and have thought about resigning every day since my first day. I know the field isn't for me because I have spent over a year as an intern in it (same work but with a different company); I have reevaluated my priorities and realize my personal life is far more important to me (the hours are far too long = M&A).
I would desperately like to resign as my personal life is too important to leave it to the side like this.
I don't think it would be too difficult to find a new fulfilling job (experience, skills, + many interests).
The problem: my thoughts about resigning + looking for a new job while at work have affected my attitude, motivation and performance. I know I can perform well if motivated: the work is the same as during my internships, which went well.
However, I have just had my first informal evaluation review and it was pretty horrible. As soon as this happened, I thought of the below issue:
The issue: I plan to stay in my (local) city and want to avoid a bad reputation. If I quit now, the only thing I will be leaving behind is a reputation for pretty slipshod/non-professional work. I would probably look for work in a related field in the same industry - everyone pretty much knows each other. I would like to avoid this, which would be stressful.
My options: (1) I follow what was really in my heart at the beginning and quit; or (2) I put my head down and cancel out my reputation by working well 8 months to the end of the year. I know I can do well if I persuade myself that my reputation is more important to me.
My questions: If I quit, can my career reputation really be damaged by what has happened in 2.5 months + an informal review? I will most likely face the same people around the table some day; and this could hamper my ability to apply to a related field (I am in M&A - I might think about eg. P.equity).
Is it true that at the start of one's career, how one sets out can define how people view you for the next several years in terms of credibility?
I essentially should have quitted my very first day, but now I think I have delayed too long and that now it is too late.
Help and thank you Jane!
