Message Name: Advice for the Burnt Out Doctor
Date Posted: 01/06/2005
In Reply To: I am curious about career opportunities for a m.d. with license. I am about to finish a 5 year residency and am considering other options. I am rather burnt out with medicine at this time. I am very open to different ideas. I would consider going back for further education if necessary. I consider myself to be very hard working and I am a good "problem solver". I am well organized and self-motivated. Thanks in advance. L1
Message: You are not alone in your feelings of being burnt out. It only gets worse in private practice ... managed care, group practice vs solo practice and liability insurance! In my coaching practice, I have encountered many physicians who are unhappy with private practice so you are making a great decision to look at your different opportunities now. What I would suggest is for you to look at what you are interested in doing? What do you like to do? What are your hobbies? Do you like public speaking? Do you like to write? After you determine your interests, then you can look at how your medical degree can be integrated into your passions. For instance: 1) If you like back packing and kayaking in foreign countries, you could work for the CDC taking medicines to remote places around the world. 2) If you like to travel, you could be a physician on a cruise ship. 3) If you like to write, you could work for a pharmaceutical company developing their medical backgrounders and sales pieces. 4) If you like the world of business, you could work as a medical director at a health insurance company. You see, the possibilities are endless! Best of luck to you! Theresa www.DiscoverYourDreamJob.com
