In Reply To: I've been offered a role as a BA recently. I'm a little unsure about what group I should aim for. I'm concerned that the job will be mindnumbingly boring, and so am looking for a fast paced group. Any advice? c1analyst, you have a take?
Message: First, a caveat: you may not have much choice - a dept. picks you more than you choose it, based on the recruiting process here. It wouldn't be wise to keep saying 'no' to prospective managers, but it's true that we want you to feel like the fit is right for you. Holding out for *exactly* the dept. you want could have you waiting for months, though. I'm going to assume that you are applying for McLean or Richmond (if Dallas/Boston or other location, choice is not an issue). There are smaller departments with people needs (banking / savings, specialized IT-related groups, etc) but these are some more likely starting places as an analyst: Recoveries (operations) Collections (operations) Other US Card Operations dept Upmarket (card business/M&A) Subprime/Mainstreet- as above Small Business (as above) Other US Card M&A or customer-related dept. Finance (US Card) - probably not as a BA (more financial analyst - but ask if you're interested) With another huge banking acquisition recently, those groups may be interesting in the near future. In Boston and McLean we have strategy-geared groups, which will be focused more broadly than some other groups. Really depends on what you like. Note that if you select a broad dept. that seems interesting to you, your role within it may or may not be as broad or narrow or challenging or interactive or etc. etc. as you'd like it to be, and some managers won't have your exact role planned out until after you get into it. That should be a start for you to think about. Anyone whose depts. are hiring, feel free to chime in...
