In Reply To: I hear talk of all these different job titles and job levels. I understand the basics of what the different types of analysts do, but i have no idea what these teirs actually mean. Analyst Senior Analyst Manager Are these just formalities? Or do they represent additional responsibility? At what point in this progression is someone pretty free to set his own goals and day? For example, I understand that the lower tiers are probably taking orders most of the time, but at what point does someone get the ability to decide what he/she should be doing instead of being told?
Message: The titles have been geared to mean just that - added responsibility, or basically how important the role you hold is. In theory, the restructuring is supposed to classify your role, as opposed to classifying you. I'd say rarely would a T6 (Manager/Sr. Manager in new structure) really be setting their own direction. T5s (Director/Sr. Director) in the largest groups would be "taking orders" a fair bit, but many have a solid rein over how they'd like to apply general business imperatives to their worlds. Note, though, that T5s generally manage a smaller piece of a department and may not have more than a handful of reports. T4s manage multiple groups or even departments, and (in my opinion) represent the first level of true high-level strategic resposibility. As far as setting your own goals and day, goals within your own world, for sure. As a manager, though, your day is often controlled by the number of meetings you have with reports/peers/bosses/etc. I'd say T7/T6 have more flexible time on a weekly basis. Remember, anyone with direct reports needs to schedule a few hours every week to meet with them to discuss more general aspects of work, performance, development and other concerns. These types of meetings are the first ones to go if a priority project is on the table ;)
