Let me tell you how things really work at Capgemini (or did 8 months ago). For starters they have many VP??s & Sr. Managers (VP/SM) that wear the expensive suits, fancy watches, expensive ink pens, expensive cars, covered parking spaces, nice offices, drain the firm of a lot of cash through payroll, bonuses and lord only knows what other ??perks??. This excessive overhead adds so much to the fees Capgemini must charge for their consultants that they have difficulty selling any work!
The Consultants / Senior Consultants and Managers (C,SC & M) that actually deliver the sold work are a great bunch. Many of them are on airplanes on Sunday afternoon and return home on Friday night ?? week after week, month after month away from their home and families. Many of them are required to work very long hours ?? without reporting the time charges (because the project was sold short ?? because of the cost & overhead) reach very high utilization numbers then are rewarded with 2.5 ?? 3.5% annual increases and bonuses that are in about the same range.
It gets better - the incompetent VP/SM who??s primary job is to sell new work to keep the C, SC & M busy can??t sell anything alone. They must have the help of the C, SC & M to prepare the responses and presentations. Many of these are fully utilized on client engagements and are required to help with these various bid responses.
SO?? if you can land a cushy VP or Senior Manager job ?? then you should probably go for it. You to could drive a fancy automobile and park in an executive parking spot, attend auto races, professional baseball, football and hockey games at the company??s expense. Receive a wonderful salary, get great bonuses. Wine and dine potential clients to your hearts content. Travel all you want, where you want too (and never traveling on a Sunday or a Friday afternoon). Then lean on the road warriors to help you prepare your presentations and RFP??s and manage your people.
If you are considering joining as a C, SC or a M ?? then get everything in writing because chances are good that whoever made ??that promise?? to you today won??t be around tomorrow (or will develop selective amnesia). You also need to have a thorough understanding of their performance management process and promotion process ?? both of which are terribly flawed when compared to other consulting companies ?? Dig deep and get ALL the facts on both of these flawed processes before you ??say yes??! As if those on the delivery side haven??t already got enough on their plate the Capgemini counseling process makes the manager??s all be a counselor for a number of consultants and senior consultants. Many of these managers have no time to be a good people manager ?? why can??t one of those fellow??s that drive the fancy car??s, park in the executive parking spaces and make the BIG bucks be people managers? You will be measured by your utilization, if you don??t make your number you will get ??beat up?? at year end review time. If you do make your utilization number you will be beat up because you didn??t submit enough knowledge base articles, or didn??t help with enough sales pursuits or you didn??t help with recruiting or you didn??t donate enough time to office charity events ?? they have enough loopholes to nail you! And also, ask the question in your interview what you are expected to do during the times you are on the beach!
