Great news that things are getting better for work life balance. When my friend worked at CA - there were no women consultants that had children and only one that I knew who was pregnant who ended up leaving the company when she had her baby. If I may ask, what position are you that they were so generous?
Although I must say, there was a huge discrepancy between people who were hired in the NC office and other offices (my friend said that NC people got better pay, worked less hours, seemed to travel less, etc) So although it seems that there are many of your colleagues who have the opportunity to have children in NC, what about the other offices? |

I work in the Knowledge Services group (research and knowledge management) so I don't need to travel, although when I had my first baby I was in a more consulting-oriented role with a full billable target. Some differences in workstyle/lifestyle may exist between "internal" employees (of which I am one) and consultants, mostly because internal employees do not have the same demands for travel and billable hours.
The discrepancy you've noticed or heard about is probably less office-based than practice-area based. It seems that some of our practice areas do more travel more than others. Some PAs are now aligning their consultants on a geographical basis to cut down on travel, and the fact that we have more offices now means that people can choose where they work and get assigned to projects where the clients are geographically closer.
Two of our most recent births were in the NJ office. One was an internal employee (still out on maternity leave) and one was a consulting manager who had her third child last fall. Her story is similar to mine: 2-3 month leave, and then came back to a full workload and is doing fine now.
