My screener asked what salary range I had in mind. Interview books will tell you to keep quiet, but the firm doesn't want to organize a half-day of interviews with LvIV's, V's, and the partner, only to find out later that the candidate is way out of line on salary expectations. Your call whether to answer, but expect a hard sell by the HR person, and the risk of getting passed over because a candidate with a better resume answered the question. Lesson1: know what the market will pay for your skills. Lesson2: HR knows the market better than you. Opinion: people who write books are out of touch with how things really work. My $0.02.
