In Reply To: I get what you are saying. While you make a valid point that if you were to get promoted to Level III in a year, you would get somewhere around 15%, give or take. Just remeber though, you would be one year farther away from making Level IV, where the big bucks come in. Lets say the salary for a Level IV is 120-130k, that's quite a lot higher than a III. It's a lot higher than the difference between the raise for a high L II versus a low L III. Additionally, you would be suprised out how nice an extra week is, and how a lot of people would be willing to make a few thousand (even $5k) less a year for an extra week. A level III also has much more visibility than a level II. You get a chance to lead a team (usually). Ultimately I think you have to decide whether you would be the type of person who wantd to make Sr. Associate. If you do, then I would try for Level III. If not, then the bigger bump in salary might be worth it. Also, most people don't take a lot of vac in their first year so maybe it's not that important to you.
Message: ...I've done my research before coming to the board. Thank you for the detailed answer, AC. Very insightful info. To the other BAH veterans, if there are alternative opinions to this string it would be great to hear about them. I'd like to dig further on your answer. On what aspect then (salary vs. level) is bah more flexible? Presumably they want to pay as little as possible without losing you (don't jump on this guys, just go with me) starting off, so would bah prefer to tag you with an L3 @ say, 90k instead of a bringing you in at an L2 @, say 95k (for example)? But, while the firm pays less at first, the "downside" to the firm of bringing you on a lesser-paid L3 is that you're now 1 step closer to the "big bucks" at L4. So it seems like a give-take and just a matter of timing before it all evens out.
