The dolts who run Bloomberg broadcast know how to give orders and instill fear, but don't have a clue on what makes a good broadcast. Because Bloomberg spends a fortune to buy time on the E channel in the morning to get into the same number of homes that CNBC penetrates on cable, BTV has at times managed to get better ratings than CNBC. Then for the rest of the day, no one sees BTV unless they have satellite TV. In addition, even on digital cable systems, BTV is at a big disadvantage because it ends up on channel 300, while CNBC is on low number like say Channel 17. For all its faults, CNBC is still seen as THE top brand name in business broadcasting. Any booker at BTV will tell you that they work in the shadow of CNBC when it comes to attracting top guests. In addition, any TV ad salesman will tell you they are screwed right now up against CNBC and the position its has on cable systems. BTV will never over come its inferiority complex until its gets into more homes and puts on programming with the same gravitas as CNBC. That means people like Winkler and Kohn, with their bizarre programming tastes, will have to go and that will never happen. Bloomberg Radio is an even greater failure??.what more need I say about that? There is no convergence taking place and there won't be with dummies who have brilliant content but don??t know how to translate it into good television, or radio worth tuning into It starts at the top with people who know what they??re doing.. not with the infrastructure.
Message: when it comes to the tv rating wars, there is no place to hide. Top management is most certainly aware of their position in the pecking order so one can only conclude that they do not care. If you can take in $3.0 Billion dollars a year by generating 4,000 written articles a day for the Bloomberg system...just what sort of incremental returns will you generate by pumping additional millions into radio and tv programming? The guys at the top are doing just fine with the status quo and since their names aren't Bloomberg why would they care that B-radio is #37 in it's market or that BTV is a distant #2 to CNBC...they're making their bonus money off the Bloomberg Terminals...and screw everyone else.
