People call him Darth Vader and are scared sh**less by him. What he says goes, no matter how stupid or brilliant it is.
The SW development methodology is famously known as "Just F**king Do it, and - as Mike B himself brags about in his book - they don't do planning, it's not really needed.
So, if you a) wanna program in a vaccuum, b) wanna develop substandard quality software, and c) always live in fear that Tom Secunda will come and talk to you or your manager about something - then by all means, work for Bloomberg!
I have personally seen several examples of how he will change direction of a project several times because he can.
Also, this guy does not believe in anything that isn't built inside of BBG, and that includes its own DB, Messaging system, their own browser, their own app servers, etc, etc, etc. So, if you don't mind using mostly proprietary technology to develop crappy products, then by all means - work for Bloomberg!
RUP, SDLC, PMI, CMMi - it's all irrelevant to Bloomberg, becuase they've done so well in the past that there's no need do more than pretend that they believe in best practices, etc, etc. |

Man, your right gone2pariah. Everything he has done has been horrible. I mean its not like Bloomberg is successful or anything. Speaking of the "crappy products" message system you referred too. You do understand that is the most used function on the Bloomberg. Many Clients pay the $1700 + primarily for the message system. Tom S. has made decisions in our company that everyone thought was crazy at the time that turned out to be genious. In the late 90's during the internet boom, everyone thought we should go away from a private network to total internet based Bloomberg. Everyone said "you can get all that info on the internet, noone wants a closed system, Bloomberg will be out of business if they keep up with the dedicated lines and proprietary network". Now, our network, by far, is the most reliable in the industry. Just ask any Client who has Bloomberg and Rueters which one goes down more.
