Message: Job title: Department Manager Location: New York, NY Dates of Employment: 4/2005 to Present Submitted on: MAY 18, 2005 All associates are hired in as part-time and you will work your way up to full time status. The turnover rate among sales associates is phenomenal. With a new group of associates starting every week. Associates are screened but many that work there are students that really do not have the level of commitment needed. (Many associate call out on a regular basis or just don't show up for work. All Manager candidates are offered full-time status - the turnover rate among manager's is also great with many manager candidate's quitting within the their first week to a few month's The training that is provided is very satisfactory. This company has worked hard to develop a good training program to launch their management associates into their positions. Although a good program their definitely needs to be some enhancements done to it so that the associate have more support on the job. ( I am not sure if they realize this but this is a major cause of their high turn-over-rate for Manager??s. In addition to the ridiculously long hours. All Manager's will work a 10 hour day every day. If you have a social life or a family. Think again about working for this company as you will spend most of your time their and the rest of your time trying to manage your exhaustion so that you can get the tasks in your personal life accomplished. All associate's that are wooed by this company are high caliber associates who become disillusioned by the fast pace, and sometimes unrealistic demands placed upon them by senior managers. YOU MUST GREET EVERY CUSTOMER. WHICH AT TIMES MEAN THAT WITHIN A MINUTE YOU MIGHT BE GREETED 6 or 7 times. Customer Comment: ??Do they pay you to say hello every 5 seconds?" Associate: " Well not per se but it is required that we greet every customer so it is possible that you will be greeted many times on your way in, through out your shopping experience, as well as on your way out. Customer: " Wow, Well I wish they would stop. It is really kind of annoying. Once or twice okay but 50 time is a bit ridiculous. In addition: to this be required the company secret shops the associates. A good practice but secret shops are really unrealistic and does not paint a good enough picture. A one day snap shot does not paint a good enough picture for what happens everyday. Manager's are expected to be merchants but are really not given the opportunity to be good merchants. Simply put department manager's are overpaid sales and stock associates. With the amount of activity that goes on throughout the day and the number of customer that you must support (customer comes first) it is almost impossible for you to get anything but the basics done. YOU WILL HAVE AT ANY GIVEN TIME 4 TO 5 different people giving you different direction. The walkie- talkies that are used are overly used by manager's on duty. They interrupt and are a nuisance at time. Many times their is unprofessional banter coming across the airwaves that can be overheard by the customer. There is also a high level of sarcasm used with staff that is unprofessional and used out of the fear of confrontation by that of senior manager's This is a very operationally inclined company. Upper management are not trained properly in managing and coaching their people.
