Just a word of calm. Every big firm goes through an anxious period where the news about them sucks the big one. In our case it's particularly ironic as the accounting scandal (apparently incompetence rather than malfeasance) reflects poorly on our own core competency implementing financial systems for clients. It's incredibly rare that a company actually goes down like an Arthur Anderson or an Enron. You have to do some serious sh*t for that and no one is suggesting BE has done anything that awul.
Also consider the fact that we are continuing to win new contracts, and big ones. The Google partnership has generated alot of much needed positive buzz. BE is still hiring. If our rep was as bad as some posters make it, we wouldn't be winning jack.
I'm just not that concerned with the prospect of mass layoffs. We have work to do, and people who are on contracts which have run out in my practice are being almost immediately moved onto other projects. While it's not a great time to be an admin or a work on call employee, it's still not so bad for us.
As many people have already indicated, there have been a lot of moves at the company that seem to be aimed at achieving a short term boost in profitability. Whether the rumors are true or not (going private, merging, being bought, etc), the most likely case is that anyone working a funded project is keeping their job regardless. If they hire you right now, they have a project for you.
If you're thinking about taking a job here, remember also that most consultants don't last more than 2-3 years at one firm. If it's your first gig, it is an excellent entry into consulting and valuable experience for your next job.
I know raises have been rough here for lots of folks and the lack of bonus (and the method for giving them) is frustrating beyond measure, but I can't complain on balance. The people here are great and the management has been accomodating. The work is interesting. I've been with BE for about a year at this point, and just got a promotion from Sr. Consultant to Manager. In the year I've been here, my salary's gone up about 17%. No kneepads either. Seriously.
Bottom line: if you don't have a better offer, take it. It just ain't that bad. I like it here. |
