Per diems are only for those who travel and want to make a sacrifice to be away their families every week. The real raise needs to be at the per annum salary compensation, not these extra perks we get as a part of travelling.
I hear where you are going with this but I got one more thing to tell you - unless you try, you can't save too much to warrant for a raise. And even if we get an increase in the per diem, it's the Federal Government increasing the standard ratess for these that directly impacts the increase we get, not BE so to speak.
My whole point is that I've a 2 year old son that I have not had much time to spend with due to the weekly travels. Coincidentally he was born right at the time I joined BE. So I've not had any valuable interaction time with him whatsoever. And now given that he is 2 years old already, in another two years or so he'll be going to preschool. I don't know about you all out on this board but I value time with my family. And working with BE has its times when it interferes here. And what makes it worse is that BE themselves won't do anything on the compensation end to recognize what kind of sacrifice I'd go through for them. That said, there has to come a time when I have to place my foot down. If it involves getting local engagements, then that's the way I'll have to do it.

My friend, I don't know where you are located, but I would like to offer some sage words of advice. I'm an ex-BEE who slaved away there for over 6 years. Either get out of that local assignment or get out of BE. By now, you've probably figured out that no one is going to rescue you from your situation. But beware where you do go if you leave BE, because other companies may try to force you into extensive travel, too. Forget about what everyone else is saying and following your conscience. If you're in the DC/MD/VA area, there are more jobs out there. And there is life after BE. Good luck!
