The bands listed actually appear pretty reasonable. Different groups have different bands based on market conditions. It's not easy to compare your salary versus another post on Vault. Too many variables (what metro market do you live in, PS or not, etc.)
I started at BE in 1998 as a consultant at $60K with 5 years experience in industry.
I'm sure it comes as no surprise that MDs have a tool kit of white lies they use to address these type of concerns. In every group there will always be the MD's favorites that will be disproportionately rewarded with large salary adjustments, stock options, etc. It's the nature of capitalism. Part of an MD's job - like any business leader - is to pay you and I as little as they can get away with. Many of my colleagues who have heard the white lies you mention have been amazed at the counteroffers they receive when they quit. All of a sudden the MD has the amazing ability to give you a 15% raise. Why? If you quit their bonus is impacted.
One thing to think about too is how established your MD is at BE. If he/she is a relatively new MD with a smaller team then you may be at the mercy of a boss who really can't get you much.
Consider this: there have been a lot of BE folks who have quit recently and gone to our competitors (including the Tiger Woods team) only to return within 6 months saying "it's no better over there". The Tiger team is a great place to work if you are 22, right out of college, and need an organization to tell you how to be a consultant.
I close with this: interview with our competitors and get a sense of what the market thinks you should be paid and use a job offer to discuss with your MD a salary adjustment.

I am at a Competitor - DC. How is the Org. structure in BE? Is their a firm reporting relationship in terms of having an MD to whom you can talk to, discuss your concerns etc.? Because, here you are pretty much up for the grabs - staffing is through internal networking, there is not a firm or dedicated MD for each resource with whom you can bounce your concerns etc. How is the staffing model at BE?
