In Reply To: (1) Re your school, am I correct "Beantown" and not "Farmtown". Jolly Jack got his grad degrees at UofI. (2)I agree with you that if you are in corp fin, the move from banking to industry is not as difficult as from private banking to industry. It is of course easier to move from finance in an industry to another position in the same industry. My point (to beat a downed animal) is that it's best to have a long term career plan to (a) maximize goal achievement and (b) serve as a way of keeping you from getting inadvertenly diverted. Of course, no plan can be cast in stone because of the inevitable changes that occur, but if you don't have a map, you might get "lost". (3) GE has a reputation as a "school" for industry. It's perceived to offer good training, exposure and experience. Having a GE notch on one's resume is a big plus. It's really good for a general management role. (4) Me - Post MBA. IB and love it. No plans to leave for another industry. Maybe later do something to help people/society.
Message: Never heard Beantown/Farmtown used before but I am at UofI. Not UMass. I understand your point and I do not disagree. However, as you said, plans change and at this moment, I do not want to set a specific focus. A rough map maybe, but not a final line yet. Then again, that makes it harder to define goals! As for GE, they will be here in our career fair in a couple of weeks, hopefully they will be recruiting for internships as well! I went to a presentation by Citi and one by JP Morgan in the last couple of days. Liked JP more than Citi but we'll see. Am I right in assuming you work at JP? I think I saw you posting in those threads at some point. I'm glad you are enjoying you IB career. Listening to some of the speakers, who were all analysts, many were interested in PE or MBA's at this point. Only one was staying in IB. High burnout rate I suppose. I had one question regarding the "why XY" section. I asked one of the advisors but didn't get a response I liked. What would I include there? I have some rankings but just saying "I would like to work here because it is ranked high in A, B, C" seems foolish. And the "work with intelligent people" is also cliche. So any thoughts? We were also told to truly understand what an analyst does before applying. His full job so if we ever get asked that at any point, we should be able to discuss it. I have a rough idea reading the firm websites but on a day-to-day basis, what are the real life duties of an analyst? Thanks again for your time! -clegg
