I've worked at advertising agencies, big and small, for over 25 years. You must first decide whether you want to be an account person or a creative person. You can't be both at an agency. The two are diametrically opposed, right brain left brain, you know.
You have a BFA and the technical skills to be an AD/CD. I'd suggest going that way. Contact the creative directors at local agencies and let them know you'd like to work as a free lancer leading to full time. After an initial meeting make two calls a week to stay in touch and find out if they have anything you can help out on.
