In Reply To: I have been working in an entry-level job at a big agency, but now that I am pretty familiar with day-to-day duties it involves, it's not challenging enough for me anymore. How should I approach this issue? I feel that one month is too short of time spent in an agency to ask for a promotion.
Message: Basically the minimum amount of time to spend anywhere before being offered a promotion is 6 months. But that doesn't mean there aren't things you can do to challenge yourself or demonstrate what your worth. If you're in a good company, you should be able to jump in anywhere you see the need for help. Offer to help your boss put together her powerpoint presentation. Create graphs, spreadsheets, etc just to help out. Also, if you see a procedure that needs fixing...fix away or recommend easier ways of doing it. Make spreadsheets for that too, to organize things, to keep the dept informed. That's the only way to get yourself noticed in advertising. Jump right in and show them what your worth. It's very competitive and you'll find later that you'll even have to out do other folks just to get that promotion. But it can be worth it. High level account people make a lot of money, they wine and dine clients and enjoy other benefits. I too have trouble with the strict hierarchy and have a tendency to buck the trend. That's why I've just accepted a position with an Interactive agency. It's less structured there but just as much fun. Good luck, but the one thing agencies hate, is when you are too presumptuous. I wouldn't bring up that promotion idea just yet.
