In Reply To: I wasn't trying to be snotty when I say that "I am the media" but it just seems like I'm being dismissed before the interview and sometimes I really feel like I'm just there for the EOE count. I freelanced doing PR for a month and do occasional work with that company. I've worked on the planning of campaigns and looked at what can be accomplished under a certain budget . . . It just seems that when push comes to shove, they'd rather hire some kid who just got out of college because he or she is cheaper. I will keep trying at it. I would like advice on joining an organization. I've looked into the PRSA chapter and WIC chapter in my town but they all meet on weeknights, when I work. Are there any other options?
Message: Is your job hunt serious enough to use a vacation day so that you can attend PRSA or WIC meetings? Don't forget IABC if you have a local chapter. Be sure to check out seminar programs and social events in addition to formal meetings. Many of the involved members support other events as well. Alternative idea: join a committee of some kind that is dedicated to a specific project (such as an awards competition or professional development program). When I'm a committee chair, the people who voluntarily come to me and take on some key task are like gold. I don't need them to show up at every meeting, just to do the work and keep my posted. I'd pass someone like this a tip anytime! And it may sound corny, but how about your chamber of commerce, service clubs, activist groups? You've just got to network your brains out. After all, this is what PR types are expected to do. Keep freelancing, keep interviewing, keep hustling. Go back to school if you must. When you've got your act together, you will eventually impress the right person. Gayle, San Diego ("Been there")
