In Reply To: Dear anonymous and all those that have submitted responses. There is a very effective way to break into the industry (PR or Advertising - online only or traditional full-service): industry recruiters. Believe it or not, these recruiters can be your best friends and far more effective than you alone could ever be. Reason? Many of the larger agencies or companies with in-house departments do not recruit directly from the marketplace; they rely on the broad reach and expertise of industry-specific recruiters such as Digital People and Option One. These aren't staffing firms or temp agencies. They are true recruiters paid by the agencies and companies to find the best and freshest talent. If that avenue doesn't work, consider approaching smaller agencies to begin your career. Trust me, your resume won't get lost in the shuffle there. Once you gain the experience you're looking for, larger agencies will take notice and begin contacting you. Don't know how to get in touch with the smaller agencies or who they are? Go to bizjournals.com. Each major metropolitan market has a business journal or chronicle (i.e. Atlanta Business Chronicle, South Florida Business Journal). They are each published by the same company. Each one has a book of lists which includes a list of the top 75 to 100 local market agencies. Trust me, folks. This is first-hand experience talking from someone who was right where you are now several years ago. Best of luck to all of you.
