I am currently entering my junior year at Rutgers University and was just admitted into the Rutgers Business School. I am still unsure as to what major to choose. My knowledge on Accounting is limited to fincial accounting and I am currently working for Merrill Lynch on the sales and trading side. I was wondering which major, Accounting or Finance, will give me more paths to choose from and more bang for my buck. Any suggestions? |

Lynch,
Have you taken accounting or finance classes? Many people are able to make this decision based on their experiences with intro classes.
I know that money is always a factor, but remember that you still must like what you are doing, otherwise your marketability will suffer. There may be more money in finance related fields over accounting, but you will have more success being a passionate accountant than a finance major who really doesn't enjoy what he is doing (as your work performance and attitude will show this).
Rutgers has an outstanding accounting program, but you ultimately need to ask yourself what you enjoy doing more.
If you are completely undecided, you may want to look into a double major. It will take more time, but your knowledge will be more well-rounded.
As far as what will give you more paths to choose from, it completely depends what your ultimate career goal is.
