In Reply To: Hi, anyone here is working in big five as IS auditor? what's big difference from traditional auditing? Can I, a graduating master student in computer science, join the IS auditing team in those firms? or have to take some some business courses in school before on job?
Message: Well- I am and have been for four years. My experience is as follows- IS Auditing... in my experience can include Accountants with IS experience and Computer People with business savvy- I've seen people from both sides of the equation (Computer Science, DIS, MIS)and Accountants with computer skills (B.S Acctng, B.S. English, History, and M.S. or MBA Acctng)succeed AND fail- mostly it depends on your willingness to learn, respect the skills of others and take a big picture view of a business organization. Some of the Computer Science majors (and Electrical Engineering majors) I know are terrific IS auditors. Some of the Accounting/MIS majors I know are not. Sometimes it is the reverse. The biggest hurdle I see in the overall IS Auditing & Security field is that a lot of the people in it don't recognize the synergy in both disciplines (computers vs. auditing/accounting) IS auditors don't respect financial auditors and vice versa. In summary, if you're willing to keep an open mind and listen to those who have different skills (like accountants and auditors), there's no reason why a CS graduate can't be extremely successful as an IS auditor. FYI- I am a CPA, CISA, and CISSP, so I've seen it from all sides.
