In Reply To: So here's my situation: I just graduated from Gardner-Webb University (some may have heard of it & most others probably have not) with my B.S. in Accounting and am in search of my first "real" job in the industry. Throughout pretty much my entire undergrad career, I was not very active in my search for a job; the reason for this was due to the fact that I had one lined up with a local CPA. Unfortunately for us both, about 2 months ago he had a massive heart attack - that he miraculously and thankfully survived - & will, consequently, not be in practice anytime in the foreseeable future. I, as a result, am now searching all of the job search engines on a day-to-day basis for an entry-level position to come my way and don't think that I am going to have the greatest luck in doing so. I'm ultimately not really sure what kind of positions I should be looking for. I had a 3.9 GPA, graduated Summa Cum Laude, won awards, and had multiple honors. My only downfall is that I have little experience - although I have worked in my family's business as a bookkeeper for the past 3 years. When it's all said and done, what type of job should I be trying to get? I mean is a staff accounting position too high up for me, or should I be trying to find something a little less responsibility-oriented like an accounting clerical (clerk) position or etc.? Also, based on the credentials that I listed, how successful do you all think that I will be in my search for something in the industry?
Message: If your GPA is that high and you have a place to live, get a study schedule going. Get the CPA or another certification. Layoffs happened all over... and lots of financial services companies cut the smart certified people and are left with people who can not pass any such test. Believe me I know! So be outstanding and get the seat you deserve. Some underachiever who had the "right" boss last year should give up his/her seat to the better qualified.. this will happen! Good luck
