Your chances of making the switch are slim unless you have other prior relevant business experience. Most firms outsource their tax work to their outside CPA firm. I am a corporate controller from a Big 5 firm, but I came from neither the tax nor the audit side. I got lucky when I came out of college and landed a position in the corporate finance department. After 2 years I made the transition. |

Hi! I am a college student faced with the decision of whether to begin my career in audit or tax. I will graduate in May from a top acct'g program with my masters in tax. I would like to become a Controller, VP-Finance, CFO, etc. (i.e. a long-term career on the financial/reporting side leading up to CFO).
I have offers for both audit and tax--and tax pays a GREAT deal more. Can I begin my career as a tax consultant and later make the switch to controller, or should I suck it up and foot and tick for two years for half the pay? Maybe you could shed some light on the skills/background necessary to become a controller (and later a CFO). Thank you in advance for your time.
