You'll have to make sacrifices (real sacrifices, not 1 car instead of 2) but it is certainly doable and done by many, myself included. I have several coworkers that live in Jersey, Queens, Long Island, etc. but also several that live in the city. You're apartment will be small, your rent will be more, and you won't have a car.... but you'll live in the center of everything and have access to things you won't find anywhere else in the world. It's certainly not for everybody, but if you've visited and loved it, why not go for it.
I can almost guarantee that someone will respond (probably someone who's never lived here) and tell you "fat chance" or "good luck finding an apartment". The truth is, if you willing to forgo some luxuries, you can certainly make it happen and still keep a reasonable budget. I've done it and plan to continue doing it as long as my wife will allow :) Hope this helps. |

I am outside of NYC at the moment, looking to get an apartment in the new yr, as thats when my position starts, but hmm...my initial response was going to be similar to tumbler, I wasnt going to say easy, but it is doable. Ofcourse, he actually living in NYC I guess would have a more legitimate response.
Entry level assurance salary, you should be able get apt's relatively comfortably in outskirts as mentioned-Queens, LI, NJ, and apt's in the city, well maybe I just havent been hunting well enough for them, but so far the apt's Ive seen are out of my reach, and no, I don't have standards :) I only happened to find ones for 2-3k a month. Any advice on where to look for more affordable housing in the city would be appreciated.
To the original poster, if youre looking in the near future, I'm open for a roommate, if interested, email me.
